The UEFA Champions League Match Week 5B ended yesterday night with 8 matches played across Europe. There were plenty of goals, thrills, and action to report as we saw both refereeing decisions that were spot on and others that were greeted to much criticism and controversy. The group stages of the 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League season is finally coming to an end and 16 spots are available to be filled as 16 teams move to the round of 16 knockout stage o the competition.
At the end of yesterdays Champions League matches, 12 teams out of a possible 16 teams have already booked their place in the Round of 16 knockout stage with one match remaining to be played in the group stages.
Below is a curated list of all the teams that have already qualified from each of the Groups, their current standing on the Champions League Group table and their points.
As the Champions League table stands right now, Atletico Madrid and Borrusia Dortmund have both qualified into the next – Round of 16 knockout – stage of the UEFA Champions League competition for this season. Although we’ll need to wait until the last group match is played before we can determine which of the two clubs qualifies as the group winner and tops the table.
As it stands, Atletico Madrid has 12points while Borrusia Dortmund has 10points from 5 matches respectively. It cannot be determined now who tops Group A until after the last Group A game is played.
The situation is a bit different in Group B as only Barcelona can be confirmed to have qualified into the knockout stages and are sitting comfortably as group winners at the top of group B with 13points from 5 matches. Tottenham and Inter Milan both sit in second and third place respectively as they both have 7points from 5 matches. The other team that qualifies into the next stages of the competition would be determined after the last Group B match to be played on the 11th of December.
Napoli currently sits at the top of the Group C table with 9points from 5 matches, followed by Paris St. Germaine (PSG) and Liverpool with 8points and 6points respectively. Any of the 3 clubs can still qualify into the knockout stages of the Champions League. Although it seems all odds are stacked up against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team as they head into the last Group C match at home against current table toppers Napoli who only need one point from the game while for Liverpool on the other hand, it is a must-win game. PSG also needs at least a draw (1-point) against Red Star Belgrade to qualify into the knockout phase of the competition.
Unlike Group C which is undecided about who qualifies into the next round, Group D is very clear and decided on which teams qualify into the next stage. As it stands, FC Porto and Schalke 04 have both qualified into the next Round of 16 stage of the 2018/2019 Champions League competition. FC Porto qualifies as the table-topper and group D winner with 13points from 5 matches while Schalke 04 qualifies as runners-up with 8points from 5 matches with both teams having one game to spare.
Bayern Munich and Ajax have both qualified to move to the next stage of the UEFA Champions League competition. Their final positions would be determined after the last round of group matches have been played in a fortnight. Bayern Munich currently sits on top of the Group E table with 13points from 5 matches while current runners-up Ajax are closely behind with 11points from 5 matches and one more game to play.
Only English side Manchester City have secured a place in the Round of 16 knockout stages from Group F. Pep Guardiola’s team currently sits on top of the Group F table with 10points from 5 matches and still has one game to spare. Although it is yet to be decided which team will end up as the group winners from Group F as the current runner-up, French club Olympic Lyon has 7points with a game to spare. Even though Lyon would have to win their last game with an almost impossible 9 goals to surpass Manchester City’s superior goal difference in order to emerge as Group F winners.
Current Champions League champions Real Madrid have secured their place in the Round of 16 knockout stages of the competition with 12 points and still has one game to spare. Italian side AS Roma has also secured their place in the knockout stages as the runners-up from Group G with 9points and one game to spare.
