A meeting was held on Tuesday between the ex-Nigerian president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo behind closed door with high ranking members of the Afenifere group – a pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, on Tuesday in the capital city of Abeokuta. Chief among the agenda for the meeting is the 2019 general elections and other very important matters that has to do with the position of the Yoruba people with regards to who and who rules the country come 2019.
After the over 2 hour long meeting which started late in the afternoon on Tuesday, the spokesman of the Afenifere group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin told journalists in Abeokuta that the main topic for discussion at the meeting was issues surrounding the choice of credible presidential candidate for Nigeria as we head into the general elections next year.
Mr. Yinka Odumakin further reiterated that the Afenifere group had a clear vision of which candidate is credible enough to earn their support as we move closer to next year’s general elections, as “restructuring” is of utmost importance to the interest of the group right now.
With a campaign strategy built strongly arounf restructuring, the Afenifere group may have been wooed over by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Atiku Abubakar who recently had an intense interchange of ideas with the vice president, Prof. Yemi Oshibajo via a popular national dailies may have subtly revealed the choice candidate of the Afenifere group and they didn’t even have to say it.
Mr. Yinka Odumakin told reporters after the closed door session: “A few weeks back, Olusegun Obasanjo came to Lagos to visit Pa Ayo Adebanjo and we are here again today to return the visit in order to further strengthen the friendship with the group. The meeting also aims at creating a harmonious position in Yorubaland over the leadership of the country in respect of the 2019 general election.”
“The elections are around the corner and leaders across Nigeria are coming together to discuss the event, which is so crucial to the life of the nation. All hands must be on deck to get the country re-established and all grey areas must be ironed out”, Mr. Yinka Odumakin said further.
Spokesman of the Afenifere group portrays next year’s election as “exciting” because of the caliber, pedigree, and array of candidates to choose from. In his remark, the group will lend their support to any candidate who preach restructuring because they strongly believe that as a country, it is very imperative that we restructure so that we can actualize our dreams and move forward as a nation.
Mr. Yinka Odumakin further said that the group would announce the name of the contestant that they would support. Mr. Odumakin said: “The most important thing to the Afenifere group is the issue of restructuring. An official pronouncement would be made on the decision. The pendulum is swinging and we will let you know where it finally settles.”
Members of the Afenifere group who were in attendance at the meeting include Pa (Chief) Ayo Adebanjo; former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; Sen. Femi Okurounmu, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, Hon. Oladipo Olaitan, Prof. Banjo Akintoye, Mr. Supo Sonibare, former Minister of State for Defence, Mrs. Dupe Adelaja and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu.
